Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire to Launch Joint 330kV Power Line Project, Says GRIDCo

The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Engineer Mark Baah, has announced the initiation of a 330-kilovolt (kV) double-circuit transmission line project between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, following the successful completion of feasibility studies. Valued at €154.4 million, the project will encompass environmental and social impact mitigation, construction supervision, and overall project management.

This initiative is designed to strengthen electricity exchange and enhance grid stability within the broader West African region. During a ministerial committee meeting on June 25, 2025, Engineer Baah highlighted that the project aligns with efforts to integrate energy systems across the ECOWAS sub-region under the West African Power Pool (WAPP) framework.

The transmission line will stretch approximately 243 kilometers, with about 122 kilometers on each side of the border, connecting the existing Biahoué (Bijave) substation in Côte d’Ivoire to the new Dunkwa 2 substation in Ghana. While the current Dunkwa 1 substation operates at 161kV, the new facility will operate at 330kV, significantly enhancing capacity.

Baah emphasized that the project will not only bolster bilateral energy trade but also improve grid reliability across West Africa. He noted that it has been assessed as both technically sound and environmentally manageable, marking a significant advancement in regional energy cooperation.
