Japan Reaffirms Support for Ghana’s Energy Sector

Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in Ghana’s energy sector following a high-level visit to the Kpone Independent Power Plant near Accra, operated by Cenpower Generation Limited.

The delegation, led by Japanese Ambassador to Ghana Hiroshi Yoshimoto and Japan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ayano Kunimitsu, toured the facility as part of efforts to strengthen a partnership that dates back to the project’s inception.

Cenpower Board Chairman Mr. Samuel Nana Brew-Butler said the plant reflects strong Japanese influence in its technology and operational culture, describing it as the first Japanese-backed power investment of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

He said the visit underscored the strategic importance Japan places on the project and its long-term involvement in Ghana’s power sector.

Mr. Brew-Butler also praised the Ghanaian government for meeting its financial obligations to independent power producers, boosting investor confidence.

He said timely payments by the Electricity Company of Ghana had made 2025 a strong year for the company and signaled improved stability in the energy sector.

The assurances come as Ghana seeks to attract sustained foreign investment to strengthen power generation and support economic growth.
