The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has secured monthly savings of GH¢13.2 million following a renegotiation of its agreement with local technology firm Hubtel, which resulted in a reduction in the company’s commission from 3% to 1.65%.
According to ECG’s 2025 annual financial statement, the savings form part of measures implemented by the utility to strengthen financial discipline and reduce operating costs.
ECG Managing Director, Ing. Julius Kwame Kpekpena, said the renegotiated agreement had significantly reduced the cost associated with digital payment services.
Hubtel provides ECG with commercial, billing and digital payment infrastructure used to process electricity meter credits, prepaid purchases and postpaid utility payments, while also supporting the utility’s revenue collection operations.
ECG said it achieved additional savings of approximately GH¢5.6 million each month after separating its electronic payment platforms, a move that eliminated duplicate charges.
The utility also disclosed that it had cancelled 202 underperforming supply contracts, preventing further financial losses and generating savings estimated at US$227.6 million.
ECG said the measures reflect the commitment of its Board and Management to improving financial efficiency and enforcing stronger fiscal discipline.
