Gov’t Pushes for Sustainable Power Solutions

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Energy Minister Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor have engaged key stakeholders in Ghana’s power sector in a high-level meeting aimed at charting a sustainable and resilient path forward for the nation’s electricity industry.

The strategic session brought together leaders from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Volta River Authority (VRA), Energy Commission, GRIDCo, and other key institutions. The discussions were centered on addressing the sector’s persistent challenges and developing practical, long-term solutions.

Key issues raised during the meeting included legacy debts, high-cost power purchase agreements, tariff-related concerns, and ongoing operational inefficiencies that continue to undermine service delivery and financial sustainability.

While participants acknowledged the significant financial pressures facing the power sector, the meeting prioritized identifying immediate and actionable measures to improve the system’s stability. The dialogue also reaffirmed the collective commitment of stakeholders to the goals outlined in the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP).

As part of the reform agenda, emphasis will be placed on implementing sustainable financial strategies, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring the delivery of reliable and affordable electricity to consumers across the country.

The ministers underscored that stabilizing the energy sector is not only essential for uninterrupted power supply but also for protecting Ghana’s broader economic health. Reforms under the ESRP are expected to address systemic gaps and unlock long-term value for the power sector and the national economy.
