Nigeria targets 40% renewable energy mix by 2060 as government unveils power sector reforms

Nigeria is targeting a 40 percent renewable energy share in its electricity mix by 2060 as part of a broader strategy to reform the power sector, improve electricity reliability and drive economic transformation.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced the target during a media engagement in Lagos, where he outlined government’s plans to stabilise the sector through reforms aimed at attracting investment, improving infrastructure and expanding access to electricity.

According to the Minister, the government’s renewed focus on the power sector is anchored on key initiatives, including nationwide electricity metering, reforms introduced under the Electricity Act 2023 and a comprehensive technical audit of the transmission segment.

He said the shift from estimated billing to a metered electricity system is expected to restore consumer confidence by ensuring that customers pay based on actual consumption.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the Electricity Act 2023 in reshaping Nigeria’s power sector by allowing greater participation from state governments and creating opportunities for innovation, competition and private sector investment.

As part of efforts to address unemployment and strengthen technical capacity in the sector, government has trained 5,000 young Nigerians in electricity metering. The trainees are expected to support electricity distribution companies in expanding metering services across the country.

The government has also commenced a technical audit of the transmission network as part of measures to improve the stability and sustainability of power supply.

The Minister said the combination of regulatory reforms, infrastructure upgrades and renewable energy investments will support Nigeria’s long-term ambition of building a more reliable and sustainable electricity sector.

The renewable energy target forms part of Nigeria’s wider energy transition strategy as the country seeks to diversify its power generation mix while meeting rising electricity demand.
