CUTS International has announced its intention to initiate legal proceedings against the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) due to the recent approval of new electricity tariffs. The organization argues that PURC has not held the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) accountable for its ongoing inefficiencies. This move follows PURC’s announcement of a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all customer categories, effective July 1, 2025, while water tariffs remain unchanged.
In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News, Appiah Kusi Adomako, West Africa Regional Director of CUTS International, criticized PURC for consistently allowing tariff increases despite ECG’s persistent technical and commercial losses. He stated that the organization plans to seek an injunction against PURC to prevent further tariff approvals for ECG until the company addresses its inefficiencies.
Adomako emphasized that the Commission seems more focused on transferring the financial burden to consumers rather than resolving ECG’s systemic issues. He noted that PURC continues to raise tariffs without compelling ECG to reduce its losses, which could justify legal action to stop future tariff adjustments. This strategy reflects CUTS International’s commitment to advocating for accountability and transparency in Ghana’s electricity sector.
