The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has confirmed significant progress in restoring Ghana’s national power grid following the recent substation fire at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, 27 April 2026, he announced that two generating units at Akosombo are now back online, marking a major step in stabilising electricity supply after the disruption that affected parts of the country.
According to the Minister, the recovery process has moved faster than expected, with the second unit successfully synchronised just hours before his update. He noted that emergency technical interventions by engineers had been critical in restoring partial generation capacity.
The outage, triggered by the fire, had disrupted power transmission from Ghana’s largest hydro facility, leading to supply challenges in areas including Ashanti, Central, and the Tema enclave over the past two days.
Mr. Jinapor indicated that work is ongoing to restore the remaining units, with technical teams actively engaged in bringing the third unit back into operation, followed by the rest of the facility.
He commended engineers from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for their sustained efforts at the site under difficult conditions. Many have been working continuously since the incident to stabilise and reroute power through affected systems.
The Minister also highlighted the effectiveness of an emergency bypass system introduced during the recovery process, describing it as a key factor supporting the current restoration efforts.
With two units now operational and additional repairs underway, the Energy Ministry says it is optimistic that full generation capacity at Akosombo will be restored soon, paving the way for a return to more stable power supply nationwide.
