The Zimbabwe Electric Supply Authority (ZESA) is gearing up to expand the nation’s electricity generation capacity by developing four new power generation units as part of its long-term strategy. During a parliamentary session on energy and power development, ZESA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Cleopas Nyachowe, revealed plans for these units, tentatively named Hwange 9, 10, 11, and 12. While the initial focus will be near the coal-rich Hwange region for the first two units, the remaining units are expected to be located elsewhere, possibly in areas like Binga.
In addition to these conventional units, ZESA is also prioritizing green energy initiatives, including solar and geothermal projects, to diversify its energy sources. The recent commissioning of the Hwange 7 and 8 units has already made a positive impact on the national power supply. Kuwaadzana East MP, Chalton Hwende, emphasized the need for ZESA to seek further investments in clean energy to address rising household and industrial demands on the national grid.
As the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Energy continues to monitor ZESA’s operations, they recognize its capital-intensive nature and are preparing for the 2026 National Budget presentation. Plans for rehabilitating and modernizing older units, such as Hwange 1, are also underway, with the utility actively exploring various options to enhance its capabilities. ZESA’s initiatives are aimed at boosting energy supply and ensuring the electricity needs of Zimbabwean households and industries are met effectively.
