Zambia Energy Minister Cautions Fuel Retailers Against Hoarding Amid Global Market Uncertainty

Zambia’s Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, has warned fuel retailers against withholding petroleum products in anticipation of possible price hikes linked to disruptions in the global oil market.

He stated that the government will not allow filling station operators to create artificial shortages at a time when international petroleum markets are facing uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions.

Mr Makozo Chikote emphasized that authorities will take firm action against any fuel retailer found deliberately restricting supply to exploit the situation.

Despite concerns about global supply challenges associated with tensions in the Middle East, the minister reassured citizens that Zambia’s fuel supply remains secure.

He noted that the government, together with the Energy Regulation Board and Tazama Pipelines Limited, is closely tracking developments in the international oil market to ensure the country’s energy security is maintained.

The minister also urged fuel retailers to adhere to industry regulations and continue supplying petroleum products without disruption, warning that any station caught hoarding fuel or encouraging panic buying will face strict sanctions.
