World Bank Commits Major Grant to Malawi’s Largest Hydropower Project

Malawi’s energy sector is set to undergo a transformative shift following the approval of a major grant by the World Bank Group’s International Development Association (IDA) for the construction of the Mpatamanga Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Announced recently, the grant marks a pivotal moment in Malawi’s efforts to address its long-standing electricity challenges. The country’s unreliable power supply has historically hampered economic growth, industrial productivity, and quality of life for millions of citizens.

The Mpatamanga project, which is located in southern Malawiis is being developed in collaboration with a consortium of global energy and investment leaders, including EDF, TotalEnergies, British International Investment (BII), and Norfund. The project will significantly enhance the nation’s energy output, increasing Malawi’s installed generation capacity by nearly 66%, making it the largest energy infrastructure investment in the country’s history.

Once completed, Mpatamanga is expected to not only expand access to electricity but also improve grid reliability, reduce power outages, and help the country transition toward sustainable, renewable energy sources.

The project also represents Malawi’s largest-ever foreign direct investment (FDI), underscoring growing international confidence in the country’s energy sector and its long-term development strategy.

The World Bank’s grant will help reduce financial barriers, accelerate construction timelines, and minimize reliance on high levels of public debt, an approach that aligns with Malawi’s goal of attracting climate-smart, private-sector-driven investment.

Officials say the development of the Mpatamanga plant is part of a broader national energy reform agenda, designed to meet rising electricity demand while advancing environmental goals. The initiative comes at a time when Southern Africa is facing regional energy constraints, with Malawi now positioning itself as a hub for sustainable energy leadership.
