The Liberia Electricity Corporation, in collaboration with Senapt Liberia Trading LLC, has launched a smart metering initiative aimed at improving electricity distribution, enhancing billing accuracy, and strengthening service delivery across the country.
The project was unveiled at the Paynesville Town Hall under the theme “Powering Liberia’s Future, One Smart Meter at a Time.”
The rollout will begin in Paynesville and nearby communities, marking a shift toward more efficient resource management and improved customer engagement.
At the centre of the initiative is an Advanced Metering Infrastructure AMI system, which introduces a prepaid model that enables customers to purchase electricity in advance and monitor their usage in real time.
The technology is expected to boost transparency, eliminate recurring billing disputes, and significantly reduce power theft, which has long affected the national grid.
In a joint statement, Senapt Managing Director Nadeem Ahmad and LEC Deputy Managing Director for Operations Thomas Z. Wonkerwon said the project will modernize electricity access and deliver more reliable and convenient services to both households and businesses.
They emphasized that the system will improve energy management and promote accountability within the sector.
Under the new system, customers can purchase electricity through mobile money platforms or authorised vendors and receive a 20 digit token for instant activation on their meters.
Acting Managing Director of LEC, Thomas Z. Wonkerwon, noted that the introduction of smart meters will eliminate estimated billing, a long standing concern among consumers.
He added that the meters feature real time low credit alerts and operate on a pay as you use basis, allowing users to better manage their energy consumption and expenses.
The initiative forms part of LEC’s broader strategy to modernize the country’s energy sector, expand access to reliable electricity, and improve overall operational efficiency.
The launch attracted key stakeholders, including members of the National Legislature, senior government officials, and residents of Paynesville.
