Algeria Commissions 400MW of New Solar Capacity

Algeria has commissioned two new solar power plants with a combined capacity of 400 megawatts, marking a significant step in its renewable energy expansion.

The projects, located in El Meghaier and Biskra provinces, form part of a broader 3.2 gigawatt solar programme under the country’s target to deliver 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2035.

Authorities say progress on the programme has reached about 40 percent, with more than 1.4 gigawatts expected to come online 2026.

The move is aimed at diversifying Algeria’s energy mix, which remains heavily reliant on natural gas.
