Nigeria’s TCN Rebuilds Collapsed Towers to Restore Power on Kainji-Birnin Kebbi Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has launched reconstruction efforts on three collapsed transmission towers along the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi line, following their collapse on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, due to strong winds.

The incident occurred around 5:35 pm, causing a disruption in bulk electricity supply and affecting power delivery to parts of Kaduna, Sokoto, and Birnin Kebbi.

To speed up recovery, TCN deployed three contractors, assigning one to each damaged tower, in a strategic move aimed at minimizing downtime and accelerating the restoration process.

In the interim, affected areas are being partially supported with 6 to 7 megawatts of electricity from the Mando Transmission Substation via an alternative 132kV line.

TCN confirmed that these measures are designed to cushion the impact on Kaduna DisCo customers while the main transmission line is being repaired.

The company acknowledged the patience and cooperation of local communities, assuring them that contractors and TCN engineers are working tirelessly to restore full power supply.

The reconstruction effort is being closely supervised to ensure quick and safe completion of the tower rebuilding and line restringing.

TCN expressed regret for the inconvenience and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining infrastructure resilience amid challenging weather conditions.

This restoration project highlights the vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s power infrastructure and the need for climate-resilient upgrades in key transmission corridors.

With coordinated efforts underway, TCN aims to fully restore the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission link and stabilize regional power supply in the coming days.
