TOR And SONABHY Deepen Cooperation As Ghana Supplies 40% Of Burkina Faso’s Fuel Needs

Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and Burkina Faso’s national petroleum company, SONABHY, are seeking to strengthen their partnership as Ghana’s share of petroleum supplies to Burkina Faso has increased to approximately 40% of the neighbouring country’s consumption.

TOR Managing Director Edmond Kombat disclosed this during a meeting with a SONABHY delegation, noting that the share had risen from about 15% since President John Dramani Mahama assumed office in January 2025.

Mr. Kombat attributed the growth partly to the longstanding relationship between the two companies, which has supported the movement and supply of petroleum products through Ghana to Burkina Faso.

He said the increased supply share reinforced Ghana’s position as an important petroleum trading and distribution hub in West Africa. He added that closer collaboration with SONABHY could create further market opportunities and advance TOR’s commercial objectives.

During the visit, the SONABHY delegation also met the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, to express appreciation to him, President Mahama and the government for supporting petroleum transit, trade and supply arrangements with Burkina Faso.

SONABHY Managing Director Patrice Forogo welcomed the expanding relationship and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening petroleum trade through Ghana.

Mr. Forogo said closer cooperation could create additional revenue opportunities for both companies through mutually agreed transactions involving petroleum products and related services.

He also congratulated Mr. Kombat on his appointment as TOR managing director and wished him success in executing his responsibilities.

The visit concluded with a tour of TOR’s operational facilities, including the utilities section, tank farm, newly established safety block, quality control facilities and the F-61 furnace at the crude distillation unit.

The tour provided the delegation with an opportunity to examine the refinery’s infrastructure and gain further insight into its operations as both companies explore ways to expand their cooperation.
