South Africa has maintained its position as Africa’s leading renewable-energy market, generating more than 50 terawatt-hours of power from renewable sources in 2024, according to the latest Powering Africa’s Future Energy report by Forvis Mazars.
The report states that the country’s output was fueled by hydroelectric power at 10.1 TWh, solar at 8 TWh, and wind at 9 TWh, with other renewable sources making up the rest. This reinforces South Africa’s status as the continent’s leading producer. Forvis Mazars Director Johan Marais said South Africa’s abundant solar and wind resources, along with recent policy reforms, continue to support its energy transition goals and attract investment in wind, solar, biofuels, and emerging green hydrogen projects.
