Sierra Leone has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China for the supply of 1,000 electric buses, a move aimed at transforming the country’s transportation sector and easing the burden on public servants.
The agreement was signed in Freetown between the Ministry of Public Administration and Political Affairs (MoPAPA) of Sierra Leone and the Economic and Commercial Counseling Center of Guangzhou (ECCE-G) of China.
It was formally endorsed by Hon. Amara Kallon, Minister of MoPAPA, and Mr. Ho Jun Long, Vice Representative of ECCE-G.
Minister Kallon described the project as a landmark initiative that combines housing and electric vehicle delivery to improve incentives and the welfare of civil servants.
He revealed that government will collaborate with the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning, and other agencies to ensure smooth execution.
A dedicated team is expected to travel to China to finalize the main agreement that will pave the way for implementation.
The project is valued at USD 200 million, with delivery of the electric buses scheduled over a six-year period.
Officials say the initiative will not only modernize Sierra Leone’s transport system but also reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut urban congestion.
The collaboration underscores China’s growing role in Africa’s green mobility drive and Sierra Leone’s commitment to sustainable development.
Once completed, the project is expected to enhance public service efficiency, improve commuting for civil servants, and accelerate Sierra Leone’s clean energy transition.
