Senegal and Sierra Leone seal energy and mining cooperation agreement

The governments of Sierra Leone and Senegal have signed a cooperation treaty in the energy and mining sectors aimed at unlocking shared opportunities in resource development.

The agreement was signed by Hon. Julius Daniel Mattai, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, alongside his Senegalese counterpart.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Centre on April 20, 2026.

The agreement marks a significant step in deepening bilateral relations between the two countries, building on earlier high level engagements, including the state visit of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to Sierra Leone and a subsequent visit by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to Freetown.

Under the treaty, both countries are expected to enhance collaboration in areas such as energy security, mineral resource development, investment promotion, technical knowledge exchange, and policy alignment.

The partnership also supports broader continental objectives under the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to strengthen intra African trade and economic integration.

Officials described the agreement as a practical step toward converting diplomatic relations into tangible development outcomes that will benefit citizens of both nations.

The deal further builds on earlier agreements reached in Freetown in June 2024, which covered sectors including energy, mining, agriculture, fisheries, petroleum, infrastructure, and trade.

The Government of Sierra Leone reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging such partnerships to drive economic growth, attract investment, and advance regional cooperation.
