President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that recent power outages in parts of the country are due to ongoing electricity infrastructure upgrades and not a return of the prolonged “dumsor” crisis. He gave the assurance during a visit to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) as part of his “Resetting Ghana” tour.
According to the President, the interruptions are linked to a nationwide programme aimed at improving power distribution and replacing ageing transformers. He revealed that government has procured about 2,500 transformers under the first phase of the intervention to enhance electricity reliability and meet growing demand across communities.
President Mahama explained that many existing transformers are overloaded due to rapid population growth and expansion of settlements. He said the upgrade exercise will be implemented in phases and is expected to significantly stabilise power supply once completed, while urging public understanding during temporary outages.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, added that the rollout has already begun in several regions including Accra, Tema and Tamale, with further installations planned nationwide. He said the programme, supported by the Electricity Company of Ghana, is part of efforts to modernise the grid, improve response to faults and strengthen overall system reliability.
