West African Ministers Strengthen Regional Energy Strategy on Gas Pipeline Project

Energy ministers from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, and Togo have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional energy cooperation through the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) following a high-level meeting in Abuja.

The meeting, organised by the Committee of Ministers overseeing the project, brought together key stakeholders including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the West African Gas Pipeline Authority, and the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited to review performance and future expansion plans.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the country remains committed to sustaining and expanding the pipeline network. He revealed that over 613 million MMBtu of natural gas has been transported since the project began, with Nigeria supplying more than 68 percent of total volumes to neighbouring countries.

Stakeholders also noted that gas throughput rose to about 80 million MMBtu in 2025, with discussions ongoing to increase pipeline capacity utilisation by up to 45 percent in 2026. The renewed engagement is aimed at enhancing energy security, regional integration, and the long-term viability of gas trade across West Africa.
