President Mahama endorses NSS engineer for employment after role in restoring Akosombo plant

A National Service personnel, Miss Stephanie Baan, has been recommended for employment by President John Dramani Mahama following her contribution to restoring power at the Akosombo Generating Station.

Miss Baan, an Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate currently serving with the Ghana Grid Company, was part of a technical team that worked for nearly six days to reconnect all six generation units of the plant to the national grid after a fire damaged the GRIDCo substation switchyard on April 23, 2026.

The incident forced the 1,020 megawatt facility offline, triggering widespread power outages across Ghana. Engineers and technicians subsequently worked extended hours to restore operations and stabilise the grid.

During an inspection tour of the facility, President Mahama commended the engineers and technical teams for their swift and coordinated response. He singled out Miss Baan for her dedication and professionalism, recommending her for automatic employment in recognition of her contribution.

The President noted that her performance reflects the importance of recognising and rewarding young professionals who demonstrate exceptional commitment in service to the nation.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, also praised the efforts of engineers and support staff, highlighting their role in restoring electricity within a short period.

He further disclosed that MTN Ghana has pledged a donation of one million Ghana cedis worth of airtime and data to the engineers involved, as a gesture of appreciation for their dedication and sacrifice.

The development underscores the critical role of technical expertise and teamwork in maintaining the stability of Ghana’s power system, while also highlighting the contributions of young professionals in national development.
