The Electricity Company of Ghana has commenced the installation of two high-capacity transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi as part of measures to strengthen electricity supply reliability across the metropolis.
The project involves replacing two existing 20/26MVA transformers with upgraded 30/39MVA units, a move expected to significantly increase capacity and reduce pressure on the distribution network.
According to ECG, the upgrade is aimed at addressing recent intermittent outages and voltage fluctuations in parts of Kumasi, largely driven by rising electricity demand rather than generation constraints.
Acting Managing Director of ECG, Julius Kwame Kpekpena, noted that the intervention is necessary to keep pace with the city’s rapid growth and increasing power needs, ensuring more stable and reliable electricity supply for consumers.
The Manager for Substation and Switchgear Maintenance at the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Division also described the exercise as both urgent and technically demanding, explaining that the new transformers will help ease the load on the system and enhance overall network stability.
Installation works are being jointly coordinated by technical teams from ECG’s Accra and Ashanti Sub-Transmission Divisions, with the process scheduled to take place on May 6 and 7, followed by energisation shortly after.
To facilitate safe installation, ECG will implement planned outages on the scheduled dates between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, involving temporary shutdowns on sections of the 33kV network and controlled load management on 11kV feeders.
The company has assured customers that the interruptions will be minimal and carefully managed. Communications Officer for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Collins Manu, emphasised that the short-term inconvenience is necessary to deliver long-term improvements in power reliability.
The upgrade forms part of ECG’s broader efforts to modernise infrastructure and improve service delivery in key urban centres across Ghana.
