Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has instructed the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) to prepare and submit a detailed report on the power system disturbance that resulted in a nationwide blackout.
The directive followed a meeting between the minister and key stakeholders in the electricity sector to review the circumstances surrounding the outage.
According to Hon. Dr. Jinapor, GRIDCo is expected to provide details on what triggered the disturbance, how the situation was managed and the measures needed to prevent similar incidents and improve the reliability of Ghana’s power system.
The minister said the discussions focused on the widespread power interruption recorded on July 29, 2026, which affected electricity supply across the country.
The disturbance occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m., resulting in a nationwide blackout and triggering frustration among members of the public, many of whom expressed their concerns on social media.
Hon. Dr. Jinapor said the government remains committed to strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure and developing a more resilient power sector capable of supporting economic activity, businesses and households.
He stressed that the findings from GRIDCo’s report would help inform corrective measures aimed at improving the stability and reliability of the national grid.
Following the incident, GRIDCo announced that its technical teams had commenced efforts to restore electricity supply across affected areas.
Power was subsequently restored to several parts of the country within a few hours.
