Energy Minister announces full restart of Akosombo plant after GRIDCo fire disruption

Ghana’s largest hydroelectric facility, the Akosombo Generating Station, has resumed full operations following the successful restoration of all six generation units to the national grid.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, confirmed that the recovery process has been completed, describing the effort as a major success in stabilising the country’s power system.

The plant, operated by the Volta River Authority, has an installed capacity of about 1,020 megawatts. It was forced offline on April 23, 2026, after a fire broke out at the switchyard of a substation belonging to the Ghana Grid Company in Akosombo.

The incident disrupted electricity supply across several parts of Ghana, prompting swift intervention from engineers and emergency teams.

Following the outage, Hon. Dr. Jinapor and his deputy visited the site and assured the public that restoration efforts would be carried out without delay. Technical teams worked continuously, managing the situation and restoring operations in record time.

In his update, the Minister praised the dedication and professionalism of engineers, technicians, and emergency personnel, noting that their coordinated efforts ensured the rapid return of power and the stabilisation of the national grid.

He also commended the leadership and staff of GRIDCo, VRA, and the Electricity Company of Ghana, along with other supporting agencies, for their collaboration in resolving the disruption.

Meanwhile, during May Day celebrations at Jackson Park, President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that engineers had successfully bypassed the damaged control system and restarted all six turbines at the facility.

The swift restoration underscores the resilience of Ghana’s energy sector and highlights the technical capacity of its workforce to respond effectively to major operational disruptions.
