Nuclear Fuel Supply Security Moves Higher on Global Energy Agenda

Nuclear fuel supply security is gaining prominence on the global energy agenda as governments and energy providers place greater emphasis on nuclear power to support reliable, lower-carbon electricity while reducing exposure to vulnerable international supply chains.

A 2026 market assessment covering North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and other major nuclear markets points to sustained demand for uranium and other nuclear fuel products as reactor construction, restarts and operating-life extensions continue.

Global operable nuclear capacity currently stands at approximately 394 gigawatts across 437 reactors, while another 60 reactors are under construction in 18 countries.

The assessment projects uranium demand to increase by approximately three per cent annually through 2035, highlighting the potential pressure on the nuclear fuel supply chain as demand grows.

The outlook is prompting governments, utilities and nuclear companies to place greater emphasis on strategic inventories, diversified sourcing and reliable access to uranium resources.

The focus is also shifting beyond uranium mining to the broader nuclear fuel chain, including resource access, production, processing and delivery to utilities.

As existing reactors undergo life-extension programmes and new nuclear capacity comes online, the ability to secure reliable fuel supplies is expected to become an increasingly important consideration for governments and nuclear operators.
