Mahama Administration Faces Criticism on Energy and Environmental Performance

Dr. Nyame Baafi, a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Energy, Resources and Public Policy, criticized President John Mahama’s government for achieving only 16.6 percent effectiveness in energy and environmental reforms during its first 120 days in office.

At a press conference on May 7, 2025, he presented an assessment based on 25 manifesto promises, highlighting the urgent need for coherent policies and leadership to tackle Ghana’s energy crisis. Baafi emphasized the government’s failure to implement a ban on illegal mining within forest reserves and the ongoing power outages, known as “dumsor,” which hinder economic stability.

He pointed out that financial burdens from past power agreements have diverted funds from critical sectors like healthcare and education. Baafi expressed disappointment over the lack of progress on environmental legislation and criticized the launch of the Black Star Experience in tourism, questioning its timing amid rising electricity prices.

He urged the government to honor its commitments, prioritize urgent reforms, and ensure accountability, stating that Ghanaians deserve a more effective leadership focused on their welfare.
