The Kenyan government has officially terminated the Adani-sponsored Power Transmission Lines project following integrity concerns, according to government records.
The Sh96 billion energy project, approved two years ago and signed by the Ministry of Energy in October 2024, involved the construction of a high-voltage transmission line under the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). It was cancelled a month later by President William Ruto amid intense public scrutiny of the Adani Group. The government says the termination process is ongoing, and associated costs are yet to be determined.
The Adani project was one of four major Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects in the energy and transport sectors terminated before reaching financial close.
The three other cancelled projects were road developments under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). These include the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway, which was scrapped after being deemed unaffordable, with termination costs estimated at Sh7.3 billion to taxpayers.
The remaining two projects Road Annuity Lot 3 and Lot 32 were also terminated after the government found they did not offer value for money.
