Karpowership Powers Ghana’s Growth with Reliable, Sustainable Electricity.

Since its entry into Ghana’s energy landscape in 2015, Karpowership has played a pivotal role in ensuring consistent and reliable electricity supply. Through its flagship floating power plant, the Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan, the company has supported national efforts to drive economic growth and stabilize power delivery.

A major milestone came in August 2019, when the Powership was relocated from Tema to the Sekondi Naval Base in the Western Region. This strategic move allowed the plant to transition from heavy fuel oil to Ghana’s domestic natural gas, supporting the country’s shift toward cleaner and more cost-effective energy sources.

The fuel switch is projected to save the nation approximately $170.5 million annually, with a total estimated savings of $1.2 billion over the remaining life of the contract. These savings offer not only economic relief but also environmental gains, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Karpowership’s rapid deployment model is another key advantage. Unlike traditional power plants that require extensive construction time, these floating power stations can be operational in a short period, delivering immediate support to the national grid.

Each vessel is equipped with dual-fuel engines, enabling them to run on natural gas, LNG, or low-sulfur heavy fuel oil,a flexible approach that ensures efficient performance across dynamic fuel markets. These floating plants function as self-contained, plug-and-play units, complete with onboard substations and fuel storage, eliminating the need for new land-based infrastructure.

With a generation capacity of 470 megawatts, Karpowership contributes approximately 12% of Ghana’s electricity supply, strengthening energy reliability for homes, businesses, and industries across the country.
