Iran Threatens Closure of Strait of Hormuz, Sparking Global Concern

Iran has raised alarms globally with a warning that it may close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint through which around 20% of the world’s oil passes. A senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Sardar Esmail Kowsari, stated that shutting the strait is “under consideration,” as the country looks to defend its national interests amid rising regional tensions.

The threat has sparked serious concerns about global energy security, particularly for Europe, which relies heavily on oil and gas transported through the strait. Any disruption could lead to sharp increases in fuel prices and broader economic instability. Iran’s mention of potential military actions, such as drone strikes and naval blockades, further heightens fears of conflict and trade disruptions.
