Green Cooling Essential for Achieving Ghana’s Climate Objectives, Says Energy Commission

Eunice Biritwum, Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable cooling solutions in Ghana to address rising demand for air conditioning, which contributes to environmental degradation. Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Green Cooling Project on August 18, 2025, she highlighted the need for a shift towards climate-friendly alternatives to align with the country’s climate goals and energy efficiency targets.

Biritwum warned that continuing with conventional cooling methods could lead to elevated emissions, urging stakeholders to embrace green cooling solutions instead. She specifically endorsed the transition to highly energy-efficient sludge air conditioners that utilize R290, a natural refrigerant with low global warming potential, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Energy Commission is committed to facilitating this transition through minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) and energy labeling regulations, ensuring that only efficient and environmentally friendly appliances enter the market. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing energy efficiency in Ghana, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and securing a sustainable energy future for the nation. By prioritizing green cooling technologies, Ghana can better meet its climate objectives while promoting a healthier environment.
