Government is set to digitise the reporting of electricity outages in Ghana through a new WhatsApp based system designed to allow consumers to report faults instantly and trigger faster response from technical teams.
The initiative, announced by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, is intended to reduce delays associated with traditional call centres and improve communication between utility providers and customers.
Speaking during the final day of the President’s resetting tour of the Northern Region, Hon. Dr. Jinapor said government remains committed to strengthening the electricity, renewable energy, and petroleum sectors while improving communication systems.
He explained that the new platform will eliminate the need for phone calls during outages, allowing users to simply send a WhatsApp message with their location to prompt immediate technical deployment.
According to him, “We are going to launch a system where when you have the least outage, you don’t even need to call. Just send a WhatsApp message with your location, and we shall dispatch men and women there to address your problem in real time.”
The initiative is expected to enhance real time service delivery by reducing response times and improving overall reliability in electricity distribution.
It also forms part of a broader digital transformation agenda aimed at leveraging mobile technology to close communication gaps between consumers and power service providers while improving outage management across the country.
