Ghana Gas resumes supply after Atuabo plant fault triggers outages

The Ghana National Gas Company has restored gas deliveries to thermal power plants after resolving a technical fault that forced a shutdown of its processing facility and disrupted electricity supply in parts of the country.

The issue originated at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in the Western Region, where the Burner Management System BMS controller for the Heat Medium System HMS malfunctioned on April 15, 2026.

Preliminary checks revealed that the component had been severely damaged and required full replacement.

Engineers were quickly mobilized to the site and managed to restart the plant using a manual operating system while awaiting the arrival of a replacement unit.

Providing an update, Head of Corporate Affairs at Ghana Gas, Mr. Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, indicated that a new component has already been secured and will soon be installed to restore full automated operations.

He explained that the plant resumed production later that same day at about 8:00 p.m. and is currently supplying approximately 115 mm of gas to power plants.

He assured that the situation is under control, noting that the company’s technical team acted swiftly to stabilize operations and maintain supply through manual intervention.

Mr. Kirk Mensah added that normal operations will be fully restored once the replacement equipment is installed.
