GNPC Champions Innovation to Revive Ghana’s Upstream Petroleum Sector

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is taking the lead in revitalising Ghana’s upstream oil and gas sector, with a renewed focus on innovation, collaboration, and national development. Speaking at the 2025 Local Content Conference and Exhibition held in Takoradi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, reaffirmed GNPC’s commitment to driving growth in the petroleum industry through research, technology, and data-driven exploration.

Mr. Amoah highlighted GNPC’s pivotal role in Ghana’s energy story, noting that for more than four decades, the Corporation has been central to major milestones from the Jubilee Field discovery to new exploration prospects in the Voltaian Basin. He emphasized that the time had come for bold innovation and reinvention to sustain the sector’s growth and global competitiveness.

Commending the Petroleum Commission for keeping local content at the heart of national energy discussions, Mr. Amoah described the conference theme Revitalising Ghana’s Petroleum Exploration and Production Sector: Driving Innovation and Redefining Local Content for a Competitive Energy Economy  as both relevant and visionary.

He revealed that GNPC is advancing several key initiatives, including the Voltaian Basin Project, which will deliver Ghana’s first inland drilling programme, and the establishment of the GNPC Research and Technology Centre. The centre aims to become a regional hub for energy research, data integration, and collaboration between industry and academia.

According to the GNPC boss, the corporation is investing in people, technology, and research to position itself not only as a leader but a trailblazer in Africa’s energy innovation. He also announced GNPC’s ongoing partnership with the Association of Ghanaian Suppliers in the Petroleum Industry to strengthen vendor networks, promote local businesses, and expand participation across the oil and gas value chain.

Mr. Amoah stressed that revitalising Ghana’s petroleum sector requires shared national effort involving government, investors, and local enterprises working in alignment. He said the corporation’s goal is to ensure that Ghana’s natural resources translate into tangible opportunities for citizens and communities alike.

The three-day conference brought together government officials, international oil companies, investors, service providers, and academics, creating a platform to discuss innovation, financing, and sustainability in Ghana’s energy landscape.

In essence, GNPC’s renewed vision underscores its determination to build a more resilient, competitive, and inclusive upstream sector one that places Ghana at the forefront of Africa’s energy future.
