Ghana to Build 1,200-Megawatt Thermal Power Plant in 2026

The Ghanaian government has unveiled plans to construct a 1,200-megawatt state-owned thermal power plant, scheduled to commence in 2026, as part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s energy capacity. Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the initiative during the presentation of the 2026 Budget in Parliament, emphasizing its potential to utilize an additional 150 million standard cubic feet of gas per day sourced from OCTP partners and GPP 2.

This strategic move aims to bolster Ghana’s energy security, reliability, and accessibility, catering to both residential and industrial needs. Dr. Forson highlighted that the medium-term production of gas from OCTP and Jubilee partners would be sufficient to support the generation of up to 1,200 megawatts of power.

The announcement also follows the recent commissioning of the 200 MW Bridge Power Plant, which will contribute over 7% to Ghana’s dependable thermal power supply. The government is committed to addressing financial issues within the energy sector while strengthening collaborations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

This thermal power plant project reflects the government’s dedication to modernizing energy infrastructure amid rising demand and ensuring a reliable power supply for the nation’s growth and development.
