In Accra on June 25, 2025, Ing. Mark Baah, CEO of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), announced a major regional power initiative to expand electricity trade between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
The project involves constructing a 330kV double-circuit transmission line stretching 243 kilometres, with equal portions of the line passing through both countries.
Speaking at the Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire Interconnection Reinforcement Project event, Baah warned that current interconnection capacity could hinder power trade as the West African electricity market continues to grow.
Initially launched in 2011 by the West African Power Pool (WAPP), CI Energies, and GRIDCo, the project faced several delays before being revived this year.
Valued at €154.4 million, the project includes environmental safeguards, construction oversight, and structured project management to ensure long-term sustainability.
Baah highlighted the technical and financial viability of the project, emphasizing its minimal environmental impact and its importance in securing stable regional power flows.
To coordinate efforts, an institutional framework is being set up, including a ministerial interstate committee, a technical steering team, and national project units.
The power line is expected to significantly boost energy exchange not just between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, but across the wider West African sub-region.
Final discussions to accelerate implementation will take place on Friday, June 27, 2025, as both nations move toward regional energy integration.
This strategic move underscores West Africa’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure and energy security to support economic growth and stability.
