Energy Minister Pledges Full Support for VRA to Safeguard Ghana’s Energy Security

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has pledged the government’s full support to the Volta River Authority (VRA) in ensuring the nation’s long-term energy security. The assurance was made on Friday, October 17, 2025, during the Minister’s working visit to the VRA Head Office in Accra, as part of his broader engagements with key energy sector institutions.

During his meeting with management and staff, Hon. Jinapor commended VRA for its commitment to maintaining stable power supply, despite ongoing challenges in the sector. He emphasized that the Authority’s leadership will be vital in advancing the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, aimed at expanding employment opportunities through reliable electricity access.

Acting Chief Executive of VRA, Mr. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, welcomed the Minister and reaffirmed the Authority’s dedication to delivering affordable and dependable power to fuel national development. He, however, appealed for stronger governmental backing in capacity expansion projects, noting that Ghana’s electricity demand continues to rise by about 300 megawatts annually.

Mr. Obeng-Kenzo highlighted the efforts of Ghanaian engineers who are working tirelessly to maintain and expand generation capacity, stressing the need for strategic investment and policy support to sustain progress. In response, Hon. Jinapor lauded the Authority’s resilience and professionalism, particularly over the past ten months of operational challenges.

The Minister also criticized Ghana’s over-reliance on Independent Power Producers (IPPs), describing it as financially unsustainable. He argued that channeling the substantial payments made to IPPs into VRA’s own generation capacity would yield more affordable, secure, and nationally controlled energy outcomes.

Currently, the Volta River Authority supplies over 50 percent of Ghana’s electricity, producing more than 2,500 megawatts from its hydro, thermal, and solar facilities located in Akosombo, Akuse, Takoradi, Tema, Kpone, Anwomaso, Kaleo, Lawra, and Navrongo.

Hon. Jinapor reaffirmed the government’s determination to make VRA a central player in Ghana’s energy transition, underscoring that sustainable power generation remains key to achieving economic stability and inclusive growth.
