The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned 18 new 33kV switchgears at the Odorkor Primary Substation to enhance electricity supply for over 40,000 customers across key parts of Accra.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, was led by Ing. Francis K. Atsyatsya, General Manager of ECG’s Accra Sub-Transmission, who described the move as critical to improving power reliability.
This fully ECG-funded project targets communities including Odorkor, Sakaman, South Odorkor, Kwashieman, Mallam, and Awoshie, where residents have faced frequent outages due to outdated infrastructure.
Ing. Atsyatsya explained that the 14-year-old switchgears previously in use were not only inefficient but posed safety risks, prompting the need for urgent replacement.
The new switchgears are expected to drastically reduce power interruptions, improve operational safety for ECG staff, and elevate overall service delivery.
This installation is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade strategy to meet rising electricity demand in Accra and to drive customer satisfaction.
The ECG has also emphasized safety and transparency, warning customers against fraud and encouraging the use of its official mobile app or USSD code *226# for bill payments.
The General Manager appealed to customers to pay bills on time, as revenue collection is key to funding future upgrades and expanding service coverage.
He also hinted at more projects in the pipeline and urged continuous collaboration between ECG, stakeholders, and customers for sustained energy improvements in the capital.
