Coal India to Launch $3 Billion Clean Energy Initiative to Enhance Renewable Capacity

On May 8, Coal India announced plans to invest approximately $3 billion (250 billion rupees) in clean energy projects, aiming to generate around 4.5 gigawatts of renewable energy. This initiative is part of the company’s strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070 and reflects a broader national goal for sustainability.

The state-owned miner is diversifying its portfolio beyond coal, while still addressing the country’s significant power needs. The clean energy produced will support green ammonia facilities operated by AM Green Ammonia (India), which aims to produce 5 million tons of green ammonia annually by 2030. Despite these efforts, Coal India is also expanding its coal-fired capacity to meet rising electricity demand driven by climate change and industrial growth. India plans to increase its coal capacity by 80 gigawatts by 2031-32 while targeting 500 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030.

However, the renewable sector faces challenges, including weak tender demand, land acquisition issues, and project delays. Coal India’s commitment to clean energy highlights the dual focus on maintaining coal production while transitioning to greener alternatives. This initiative marks a significant step towards balancing India’s energy needs with environmental responsibilities.
