Zimbabwe Prepares for Extended Power Outages as Hwange Unit 3 Undergoes 44-Day Maintenance

r

Zimbabweans are bracing for increased power outages following ZESA Holdings’ announcement that Hwange Power Station’s Unit 3 will be offline for statutory maintenance from September 10 to October 24, 2025. This planned shutdown comes at a critical time when many areas are already experiencing up to 20 hours of power cuts daily. Currently, the Zimbabwe Power Company is generating only 1,427 MW, falling short of the approximately 2,000 MW needed to meet peak demand.

ZESA Holdings explained that the maintenance is essential for enhancing the unit’s reliability and availability, but it leaves only four units operational during this period, further straining the country’s already struggling electricity supply. The utility underscored its commitment to providing a reliable and efficient power supply, highlighting the significance of these maintenance efforts in safeguarding the national energy infrastructure.

Zimbabwe has faced electricity generation challenges for decades, primarily due to outdated infrastructure at its hydroelectric and thermal power plants, making this maintenance period particularly critical for the nation’s energy future.
