Zambia has taken a major step to expand its renewable energy capacity by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese companies China Pingmei Shenma Holding Group and LONGi Green Energy Technology, targeting the development of up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power nationwide.
The signing ceremony, held at State House and witnessed by President Hakainde Hichilema, was part of Zambia’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix, enhance electricity access, and promote sustainable development. Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote signed on behalf of the Zambian government, while LONGi MENA President James Jin and Golden Sun Chairman Shi Tao represented their companies.
The initiative follows President Hichilema’s 2025 state visit to China, where he encouraged investment in Zambia’s energy sector. The MoU aims to provide a framework for large-scale solar energy projects, attract foreign investment, and support economic growth, job creation, and climate resilience.
President Hichilema described the agreement as a milestone in Zambia-China cooperation, highlighting its potential to strengthen energy security and advance sustainable development. Minister Chikote added that the project will play a key role in expanding Zambia’s electricity generation capacity while reducing carbon emissions and supporting the country’s green growth objectives.
