VRA’s Anwomaso Thermal Project Wins Top Honors at 2025 Project Management Awards

The Volta River Authority’s (VRA) Anwomaso Thermal Power Project has been named Project of the Year at the 2025 National Project Management Conference (NPMC) and Excellence Awards held in Ada.

Recognized for boosting electricity supply to Ghana’s middle belt, the project was completed in April 2024 and designed to enhance transmission reliability and reduce costs tied to gas transportation.

The first phase, launched in May 2023, involved relocating six GE TM2500 units from Aboadze to Kumasi—now dubbed the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project, with a 150MW capacity.

Solely funded by VRA, the project includes dismantling and reinstalling turbines, control rooms, switchyard gear, and auxiliary equipment, while Phase 2, adding 100MW, is set to conclude by late 2025.

The awards, under the theme “Innovating for Prosperity,” celebrated outstanding contributions to Ghana’s infrastructure growth, with President Mahama applauding project managers for driving national progress.

VRA also earned accolades for its Kpong Aquatic Weed Project and project management excellence across state institutions and agriculture, showcasing its broader development role.

Key VRA speakers presented on topics like energy security, infrastructure resilience, and environmental sustainability, reinforcing the Authority’s leadership in national development.

Highlights included a $12 million security upgrade at Akosombo and Kpong dams, and sustainable weed management strategies that promote clean water and community livelihoods.

The event capped off with VRA’s team receiving honors for impactful, innovative presentations—cementing the Authority’s status as a pillar of project excellence in Ghana.

Through initiatives like Anwomaso, VRA continues to prove its commitment to reliable energy, environmental care, and transformative national infrastructure.
