Tanzania Begins KSh270 Billion Transmission Project to Link Kagera Region to National Grid

Tanzania has commenced work on a major electricity transmission project aimed at connecting the Kagera Region to the National Grid and improving power reliability across the area.

The foundation stone for the 220 kilovolt Benaco to Kyaka transmission line and the Benaco substation project was laid by Tanzania’s Minister for Energy Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi on May 9, 2026, in Ngara District

The project which is estimated at KSh270 billion approximately 103 million US dollars is expected to address recurring electricity outages affecting districts within the region.

Hon. Ndejembi directed the contractor handling the project to ensure completion within the 24-month contractual period.

According to the Minister the project will permanently connect Kagera Region to Tanzania’s National Grid and improve access to stable and reliable electricity for residents and businesses. He explained that the region has for many years depended on imported electricity from neighbouring countries but the new transmission infrastructure will strengthen energy security and support socio economic development.

Hon. Ndejembi also expressed appreciation to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for continuing to provide financial support for strategic energy projects across the country.

He assured residents that the Ministry of Energy would closely monitor implementation to ensure the project is delivered successfully and on schedule.

The Minister further instructed the Managing Director of Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to secure a higher capacity transformer and improve transmission infrastructure within one month to provide more stable electricity supply to residents of Ngara District ahead of the project’s completion.

According to him the transmission project is expected to stimulate investment create employment opportunities and support key economic sectors including agriculture fishing livestock and industrial activities within the Lake Zone and surrounding areas.

Hon. Ndejembi also directed Tanzania Electric Supply Company ( TANESCO) and the project contractor to prioritise employment opportunities for local residents in project communities across Ngara Karagwe and Missenyi districts. Speaking at the ceremony TANESCO Executive Director Mr. Lazaro Twange said the project would significantly improve electricity reliability and contribute to economic growth in Kagera Region.

He added that Tanzania Electric Supply Company ( TANESCO) has already put in place measures to ensure the project is completed on time and in accordance with the required technical standards.
