Power Generation Dips 3.99% in July as Annual Growth Holds

Ghana’s electricity generation fell by 3.99 percent month-on-month in July 2026, although output remained 6.20 percent higher than a year earlier, according to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The decline in monthly generation occurred amid lower seasonal electricity demand, with improved weather conditions contributing to reduced consumption.

Despite the month-on-month contraction, PURC described generation performance as resilient, while cautioning that intermittent declines underscore the need to closely monitor generation availability and fuel supply to maintain reliable electricity service.

The figures are contained in PURC’s July 2026 Electricity Supply Fact Sheet, which assesses Ghana’s electricity generation, generation mix, system demand, available generation capacity, reserve margin and cross-border electricity trade.

The analysis is based on daily generation reports compiled by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

Thermal power remains dominant

Thermal generation continued to dominate Ghana’s electricity mix in July, accounting for 74.33 percent of total electricity generated.

Hydro and solar generation together contributed the remaining 25.67 percent.

The composition of the generation mix means the availability of fuel and the performance of thermal plants remain critical to the reliability of Ghana’s electricity supply.

Peak demand falls but remains above 2025 level

Ghana’s system peak demand also declined in July, marking the lowest peak recorded following successive monthly declines from the annual peak in April.

However, demand remained higher than a year earlier.

The national electricity system recorded a peak demand of 3,968 megawatts in July 2026, representing a 6.61 percent increase year-on-year.

The figures point to continued underlying growth in electricity demand despite the seasonal easing recorded during the month, reinforcing the importance of maintaining adequate generation capacity, fuel availability and system reserves.
