African energy leaders say nuclear power could play a key role in the continent’s energy transition as countries seek reliable electricity to support industrial growth. The position was highlighted by the African Energy Chamber and government officials during recent industry discussions, including African Energy Week and other continental forums. They argue that while renewable energy such as solar and wind is expanding across Africa, their intermittent nature means stable baseload power is still required.
As a result, countries including Egypt, South Africa and Senegal are advancing nuclear projects, while Ghana and others are exploring the technology as part of long-term energy strategies to expand electricity access and reduce emissions.
