NPA to use accident footage to track and prosecute fuel scoopers – CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Mr. Godwin Edudzi Tamekloe, has cautioned the public against the dangerous practice of siphoning fuel from accident involved tankers.

He revealed that the Authority is collecting video evidence from such incidents and collaborating with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to identify and prosecute individuals engaged in the act.

Speaking during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy to the NPA head office in Accra, Mr. Tamekloe said surveillance and enforcement measures will be intensified, particularly along high risk areas such as the Nsawam–Kumasi corridor.

He described the act of siphoning fuel from Bulk Road Vehicles as illegal, reckless, and potentially fatal, noting that despite ongoing public education, some individuals still rush to accident scenes with containers to collect spilled fuel or even puncture tankers.

According to him, such actions amount to theft and expose both individuals and nearby communities to extreme danger due to the highly flammable nature of petroleum products.

He warned that even a minor spark at an accident scene could trigger a devastating explosion.

Mr. Tamekloe strongly urged the public to stay away from tanker accident sites entirely and avoid any attempt to collect fuel, stressing that such behaviour poses a serious risk to life.
