China has indicated its willingness to support Namibia’s plans to expand its energy sector, including possible cooperation on nuclear power development if the country decides to establish a nuclear power plant.
Speaking at a media briefing in Windhoek, Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Zhao Weiping, said Namibia is well-positioned to explore nuclear energy due to its status as one of the world’s leading uranium producers.
He noted that Namibia’s growing electricity demand and reliance on imported power make alternative long-term energy solutions increasingly important.
According to Ambassador Zhao, China is prepared to collaborate with Namibia on nuclear energy projects, citing China’s growing expertise and technological advancement in the nuclear power sector.
He also highlighted China’s significant investments in Namibia’s uranium industry, including the Husab Mine, valued at about US$5 billion and regarded as one of China’s largest investments in Africa.
The Ambassador added that China supports Namibia’s broader industrialisation and value-addition ambitions within the mining and energy sectors.
He, however, stressed that any decision to pursue nuclear energy development would ultimately depend on the Namibian government and require extensive planning and safety considerations.
