Uganda Schedules Weeks of Planned Power Interruptions Across Kampala for Grid Upgrade Works

Electricity users in Kampala and nearby areas are expected to experience daytime power interruptions for almost three weeks as Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) carries out major maintenance and upgrade works on a key transmission line.

In a public notice, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) announced that the planned outages will run from May 14 to June 2, 2026, affecting residential, commercial, and industrial customers within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

According to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), the shutdowns are necessary to allow UETCL to safely undertake improvement works on the Lugogo Kampala North 132kV transmission line as part of the Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System Improvement Project.

The company said the project is expected to improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply in the affected areas once completed.

The outages are scheduled to occur between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on designated dates, depending on location.

Areas expected to experience disruptions between May 14 and May 23 include Kamwokya Trading Centre, Old Kira Road, Mawanda Road, Acacia Avenue, Kisementi, sections of Bukoto, Mulimira Zone, Kifumbira, and Tufnell Drive.

Between May 24 and June 2, outages will affect Lugogo Mall, China Uganda Hospital, Lugogo Balikuddembe Road, Bukoto Crescent, parts of Naguru, and the Lugogo Naguru bypass.

Additional outages during the same period are also expected in areas such as Kireka, Mbalwa, Kyambogo, Kirinya, Bukasa, Kireku, Namugongo Road, Naalya, Lower Kyambogo Estate, Nabisunsa, Namboole, Bweyogerere Trading Centre, Banda, Kinawataka, and parts of the Namamve Industrial Park.

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) advised customers in affected areas to make the necessary preparations during the maintenance period and urged customers to contact its toll-free helplines if electricity is not restored within the announced schedule.
