President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct a 1,200-megawatt gas-fired power plant to expand Ghana’s electricity generation capacity and address rising demand. The President says sod will be cut this year to officially commence the project.
Speaking during the “Resetting Ghana” tour in the Eastern Region on Saturday, May 2, he explained that electricity demand has grown significantly from about 3,500 megawatts when his government assumed office to roughly 4,300 megawatts currently. He attributed the increase to rising investment and economic activity across the country.
According to him, the Ministries of Energy and Finance have completed the project’s design and roadmap, paving the way for implementation. The additional generation capacity, he noted, is intended to strengthen system reliability by creating redundancy in the power sector.
President Mahama further indicated that beyond meeting domestic demand, the project will enable Ghana to export excess electricity to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, generating additional foreign exchange while supporting regional energy trade.
