Iraq is set to double the capacity of its power transmission link with Türkiye, following a new agreement with Turkish energy firm Alifrin.
The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity says the upgraded transmission line will deliver up to 600 megawatts of electricity, double the current capacity. The first phase will see 300 megawatts supplied through the 400-kilovolt Jazira-Kasak line in Nineveh province, with the full capacity expected by summer 2025.
The deal follows a “Take and Pay” model, meaning Iraq will only pay for the electricity it actually uses.
The Iraq-Türkiye interconnection, which began operations in July 2024, currently supplies 300 megawatts. Iraqi officials say all technical preparations, including stations and transmission lines, are already complete for the expansion.
