Government to hand over ECG power distribution, revenue collection to private sector

The government is set to transfer key aspects of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) operations, specifically power distribution and revenue mobilization, to a private sector partner as part of efforts to enhance efficiency and reduce financial losses.

The Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. Richard Gyan-Mensah, announced the initiative during the ECG Vendors Forum in Accra, noting that it is not a full privatization but a private sector participation (PSP) model aimed at attracting investment, driving innovation, and addressing operational inefficiencies within ECG.

The move comes in response to persistent challenges such as power theft and revenue leakage that continue to undermine the energy sector.

Mr. Gyan-Mensah mentioned that the ministry has constituted a technical committee to assess proposals from interested private entities and recommend the most suitable partner to oversee the transition.
