GNPC Explorco, Tamale Technical University Sign MoU To Boost Petroleum Skills Development

GNPC Explorco and Tamale Technical University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening technical knowledge transfer, capacity building and skills development in Ghana’s petroleum sector.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the two institutions through specialised training programmes, joint research initiatives and practical industry exposure opportunities designed to equip students and faculty with relevant skills for the energy industry.

The MoU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of Tamale Technical University, Professor Bashiru Imoro Ibn Saeed, on behalf of the university, while the signing ceremony was witnessed by the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, Mandariwura (Alhaji) Seidu Iddi.

Managing Director of GNPC Explorco, Mr. Samuel Opoku Arthur, emphasized the need to prioritise skills transfer to Ghanaian engineers to ensure local expertise leads future phases of the programme.

Principal Corporate Affairs Officer of GNPC Explorco, Mr. Kwasi Appiah, described the Voltaian Basin project as a catalyst for economic transformation in northern Ghana and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to promoting local content, employment and capacity development.

In a related development, GNPC Explorco has signed a project management consultancy agreement with LubriMax Ghana Limited and its technical partner, Well Engineers and Planners, to commence drilling activities in the Voltaian Basin.

The first exploration well under Ghana’s maiden onshore petroleum exploration campaign is expected to be drilled in the third quarter of 2026.

The partnership is expected to deepen local capacity within the petroleum industry while creating opportunities for students and researchers to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s growing energy sector.
